Mullvad vs CasperVPN (2026): Privacy-First Showdown
Mullvad is the VPN that other privacy-focused VPNs respect. Anonymous accounts, flat €5-per-month pricing, no marketing fluff, no streaming-unblocker theater. CasperVPN is a younger provider building toward a similar bar from a different starting point. This page is the most honest comparison either of us is going to write.
TL;DR
Pick Mullvad if: you want maximum account anonymity (no email, paid in cash if you want), trust the Swedish jurisdiction, and have the multi-firm audit history as a hard requirement.
Pick CasperVPN if: you want a working free tier, a lifetime plan, a CasperCloak obfuscation layer for high-censorship networks, and you are comfortable with an email-based account and a younger provider.
Account Model: This Is Where Mullvad Is Genuinely Different
Mullvad''s signup flow is unique in the industry. You don''t enter an email. You don''t pick a username. You click "Generate account number," they give you a 16-digit number, and that''s your identity. You can pay by credit card, crypto, bank transfer, or literal cash mailed to a Swedish PO box taped to your account number. There''s no support ticket history tied to a personal email. There''s no marketing email list.
CasperVPN''s account is email-based. You sign up with an email, you get a verification link, and your subscription is tied to that email. This is industry-standard, but it is genuinely less anonymous than Mullvad''s model. We do not currently offer cash-by-mail or anonymous account numbers, and we are not promising we will.
If "no information about my account exists anywhere" is your top priority, Mullvad''s account model is the strongest in the consumer VPN market.
Pricing Philosophy
Mullvad charges €5/month, flat. No annual discount. No 2-year discount. No "first month at 80% off" promotion. They have explicitly written that volume discounts incentivize providers to value long-term subscribers more than new ones, and that a flat monthly rate is the most honest pricing model.
CasperVPN''s pricing has a more conventional structure:
The CasperVPN annual rate ($5/month) is approximately equal to Mullvad''s flat rate (€5/month, currently around $5.40-5.50 USD). The lifetime plan is a long-term-customer option that Mullvad explicitly does not offer on philosophical grounds.
Reasonable people disagree about whether annual discounts are anti-customer. Mullvad''s argument is internally consistent. Ours is that letting users pay once and never again is, on net, better than billing them forever.
Protocols and Obfuscation
Mullvad ships WireGuard (their primary recommendation) and OpenVPN. They were one of the first major providers to ship a post-quantum VPN by adding a Kyber-based PSK layer on top of WireGuard. Their bridge mode (Shadowsocks) provides obfuscation against simple VPN-detection but is not designed to defeat sophisticated DPI.
CasperVPN ships WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN, and CasperCloak — our proprietary obfuscation protocol. CasperCloak is the differentiator. Where Mullvad''s threat model centers on "passive surveillance and ISP logging," CasperCloak is built for active network adversaries that detect and block VPN traffic: national-scale censorship (China, Iran, Russia, parts of the UAE), aggressive corporate firewalls, university networks, and content-distribution networks that block VPN exit IPs.
If you do not need DPI-resistant obfuscation, Mullvad''s WireGuard implementation is excellent and the comparison is roughly even. If you do need it, this is the category where CasperVPN exists to win.
Quantum resistance. Mullvad''s WireGuard-PQ is shipping today. CasperCloak''s Kyber1024 + X25519 hybrid KEM is on the way. Both providers are taking the threat seriously.
Server Fleet
Mullvad runs 600+ servers across 38 countries. They publicly disclose the physical-vs-virtual status of every server, and they publish their server provisioning playbook.
CasperVPN runs 13 servers across 12 countries on 5 continents. Every server is owned and operated by us, RAM-only, no third-party datacenter has visibility into our state.
Mullvad''s fleet is larger. CasperVPN''s is fully owned. Different bets — Mullvad''s bet is that their disclosure practices and audit history make rented capacity acceptable; ours is that owning every server eliminates a category of risk entirely. Both bets are defensible.
Audits and Trust
Mullvad has an extensive multi-firm audit history:
CasperVPN has zero completed audits as of May 2026. A third-party security audit is on our post-launch roadmap (Cure53 is one of the firms we are evaluating; no engagement has been signed yet). When an audit is commissioned and completed, we have publicly committed to publishing the full result, including any negative findings.
If audit history is a hard requirement, Mullvad is straightforwardly ahead of us today. We do not pretend otherwise.
Streaming and Torrenting
Streaming. Mullvad does not optimize for streaming. They have publicly written that targeting streaming-unblocker compatibility creates an arms race that distracts from privacy work, and they do not maintain it. Many users find Mullvad does not unblock Netflix US, Disney+, or BBC iPlayer reliably. This is a deliberate design choice on their end.
CasperVPN supports streaming. Our 13-server fleet unblocks Netflix US and several regional libraries, with broader coverage planned as the fleet grows.
Torrenting. Both providers permit P2P on every server. Both are good answers.
Censorship Bypass
If you are in China, Iran, Russia, or behind an aggressive corporate firewall, this is the section that matters most.
Mullvad offers a Shadowsocks bridge mode that helps in moderately restrictive networks. They have publicly stated that they do not specialize in defeating national-scale censorship and do not market themselves as a tool for that use case.
CasperVPN''s CasperCloak was designed for exactly this case. It is the protocol our team uses when traveling. We do not have published independent benchmarks against the CCP firewall yet — anyone who claims they do should be treated skeptically.

A Note of Respect
If you read this page and end up picking Mullvad, we think you are making a fine choice and we mean it. They are one of the most principled providers in the industry and they have earned that reputation across 17 years. The reasons to pick CasperVPN are real, but they are about features and pricing — not about Mullvad doing anything wrong.
If you read this page and end up trying our free plan, welcome. We will keep telling you exactly where we stand on every dimension that matters, and when we commission and complete a third-party audit, we will publish it in full.
